Calf Coat Sizing Guide by Breed, Weight & Age
Belgian Blue: Male calves average 47 kg (104 lbs), and females average 44 kg (97 lbs) at birth.
Holstein: Typically around 40 kg (88 lbs) at birth.
Jersey: Approximately 25–27 kg (55–60 lbs) at birth.
Guernsey: Around 29 kg (64 lbs) at birth.
Growth Considerations
Wagyu: Due to their smaller birth weight, Wagyu calves may remain in smaller coat sizes longer.
Belgian Blue: With higher birth weights, they may require larger coat sizes from birth.
Holstein: Rapid growth may necessitate upsizing coats within the first few weeks.
Recommendations
Measure: Always measure from the base of the neck to the top of the tail to ensure proper fit.
Monitor Growth: Regularly check calf size to adjust coat size as needed.
Breed Consideration: Understand breed-specific growth patterns for optimal sizing.
How Farmers Use Calf Coats
Calf coats are typically used for the first 4–8 weeks of a calf’s life — that’s when they’re most vulnerable to cold stress and need extra support. But some farmers keep coats on well beyond 8 weeks, especially during cold snaps or in harsh climates. As long as the fit is right, extended use can help calves stay healthier and grow better — so it really depends on the conditions and the farmer’s goals.
Since calves grow fast (really fast), farmers take a few different approaches:
Some invest in a range of sizes and switch coats as the calves grow.
But most choose to buy a slightly larger size from the start — giving the calf room to grow without needing to change coats.
Our best-selling sizes reflect that:
- Holstein calves usually start in a 28" Large
-
Jersey calves do best in a 24" Medium
- Wagyu (a smaller beef breed) often wear a 22" Small
- Big breeds like Belgian Blue? They go straight to the 32" X-Large
- For premature or weak calves, some farmers keep a few extra-small sizes (20", 22") on hand — those early days are critical, and warmth can make all the difference.
